Work out which fan you are shopping for
Most bad jersey gifts are not the wrong team — they are the wrong fan. Someone who owns twelve jerseys does not want a thirteenth in the same shape as the other twelve, and someone who owns none does not want the deepest cut in the roster. Pick the person first.

Asking spoils the surprise. If you have access to a jersey they already own, measure from armpit seam to armpit seam across the chest, double it, and compare that number to the size chart on the product page. That is more reliable than whatever size they would have told you.
If that is not an option, go one size up rather than down. A jersey with a little room looks intentional. A jersey that is tight around the shoulders looks like a mistake, and it stays in the closet.
When in doubt, gift the colorway, not the name. Players move. Colorways stay.
Three tiers, three budgets
You do not need to follow the sport to spend well. You need to know what the person will actually do with the piece, because that is what decides which tier is the right use of the money.

How to give it

How far ahead should I order?
Far enough that the delivery window is not the story. If the date matters, order with room to spare rather than to the deadline — a 30-day return window is very forgiving, a late arrival is not.
What if they follow a team you cannot stand?

What if I do not know which team they follow?

What if they already own that jersey?
Then change the variable: a different colorway for the same team is a different piece on the shelf. Take a look at the full roster and pick a secondary color instead of the home one.
Is a blank back a worse gift?
It is the safer gift. No roster risk, no number risk, and it still reads as a team piece. If you are not certain about a player, leave the back clean.
How do I pick between youth and adult sizes?
Youth sizing is cut shorter through the body, not just narrower. For a teenager, go adult and let them grow into it — the length is the part that gets awkward first.
Can it be returned if the size is wrong?
